Published By the Author, 1976

368 pages, well illustrated, diagrams, brown leatherette covers with gilt titles, near fine. 8 by 11 inches. Warmly inscribed by author. From the introduction: "Andrew Burgess, the inventor, was investigated thoroughly and his patents became the nucleus of the book. Hundreds of firearms were studied and data sheets mailed all over the United States. The inventive genius of Andrew Burgess was actively applied to Lever Action Magazine Rifles for a mere 16 years, 1871 to 1888. But what a sixteen years it was. Historically, the author found himself involved with Eli Whitney and the Whitneyville Armory, Winchester, John Mahlon Marlin, Colt's, L. A> Huffman, Mathew Brady and Hartley and Graham to name only a few. Unknown inventors, until now unrecognized, came to light; Samuel V. Kennedy, Frank W. Tiesing, William C. Scharf and Stephan W. Wood. ~ The Lever Action Magazine Rifles include Burgess' own early 1872 and 1875 Experimental models, the 1878 Burgess manufactured by Whitney, the Whitney-Kennedy, the Tiesing, 1881 Marlin, Colt-Burgess and finally the 1886 Whitney. ~ Unlike many books dealing with antique firearms, the author selected a technical and pictorial presentation, with a minimum of text. Photographs and other pictorial data are generously utilized and consecutively numbered within each chapter for ease of reference. The Table of Contents, Figure Index, Alphabetical Index and the Appendix are arranged to assist the reader in finding an item of specific interest accurately and quickly. Tables of production, by year and serial number, and Rarity Tables are included to assist the collector in not only identifying his or her firearm but establishing its relative rarity as well. In short, this book was designed by a collector for the use of collectors." ; 368 pages; Signed by Author, Very Good with No dust jacket as issued
